Preparing for your baby’s newborn photography session should feel exciting—not overwhelming. As a new parent, you already have plenty to think about, so the last thing you need is a long list of things to pack.

The good news? You probably don’t need to bring much more than your baby and a well-stocked diaper bag.

If you’re planning newborn photography in Maryland, Delaware, Greensboro, or anywhere on the Eastern Shore, here’s what to bring, what your photographer provides, and how to make your session as relaxed as possible.

What Does My Newborn Photographer Provide?

Before we talk about what to pack, let’s start with what you don’t need to bring.

For your newborn session, I provide the studio essentials, including:

Newborn wraps

Blankets

Photography props

Baskets and other posing items

Simple outfits and accessories

Backdrops

Baby-safe posing materials

Everything is selected and prepared with your baby’s comfort and safety in mind.

You’re welcome to bring something meaningful from home, but you don’t need to purchase special props or outfits just for the session.

What Should I Pack in My Baby’s Diaper Bag?

Your regular diaper bag should have everything we need. I recommend bringing:

Plenty of diapers

Wipes

Formula or bottles, if your baby is bottle-fed

A pacifier, if your baby uses one

A change of clothes

A burp cloth

Any necessary medications or comfort items

A favorite blanket or lovey, if your baby has one

Even if your baby is nursing, it’s helpful to bring anything you normally use to keep them comfortable and settled.

Newborn sessions are relaxed, and we’ll take breaks whenever your baby needs to eat, be changed, or cuddled.

Should I Bring an Outfit for My Baby?

You don’t need to bring a full wardrobe or any outfits for baby. Newborn photography often focuses on simple wraps, soft textures, and your baby’s tiny details.

A special handmade blanket, or family heirloom can be a beautiful addition to a few photographs.

Can I Bring Personal Items for the Photos?

Absolutely!

Personal items can make your newborn photographs feel even more meaningful. You might bring:

A handmade blanket

A family heirloom

A special stuffed animal

A meaningful book

A sports item

A musical instrument

A small item connected to your family’s culture or traditions

Before bringing anything large or fragile, it’s a good idea to check with your photographer. We can talk about how to incorporate it safely and naturally into the session.

What Should Parents and Siblings Bring?

Parents and siblings should bring a few clothing options, especially if you’re unsure what you’d like to wear.

For family portraits, neutral colors and simple textures photograph beautifully. Soft creams, whites, tans, grays, muted blues, and earthy tones are all great choices.

Try to avoid:

Large logos

Neon colors

Busy patterns

Clothing that is uncomfortable

Matching outfits that feel too coordinated

The goal is for your family to look connected without everyone wearing the exact same thing.

If siblings are attending, bring snacks, water, and a small activity to keep them comfortable while we photograph the baby.

Should I Bring a Pacifier?

If your baby uses a pacifier, bring it with you.

A pacifier can be helpful during transitions between poses or while we’re settling your baby. Even if your baby doesn’t use one regularly, some families choose to bring one just for the session.

If you prefer not to use a pacifier, that’s completely fine. We’ll use other soothing techniques, such as swaddling, rocking, feeding, and cuddling.

What If My Baby Needs to Eat During the Session?

That’s completely normal.

Newborn sessions are not rushed, and feeding breaks are expected. Whether your baby is breastfed or bottle-fed, we’ll pause whenever they’re hungry.

You don’t need to worry about the session falling behind. Your baby’s needs always come first.

A well-fed, comfortable baby is much more likely to settle into the session, so take your time and feed your baby whenever needed.

What Should I Wear to My Newborn Session?

If parents and siblings are included in the photographs, choose clothing that is comfortable and coordinates naturally.

Simple, neutral clothing tends to keep the focus on your family and creates timeless images.

You don’t need to dress formally unless that reflects your family’s style. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself.

Do I Need to Bring Anything for My Older Children?

If siblings are joining the session, bring anything they may need to stay comfortable while they wait.

This might include:

Snacks

Water

A favorite toy

A tablet or quiet activity

A change of clothes

A comfort item

Sibling photographs are often taken early in the session, while older children are still engaged. Afterward, they can take a break while we focus on the baby.

What Should I Leave at Home?

You don’t need to bring every baby item you own.

Try to leave unnecessary bags, bulky equipment, and extra belongings at home whenever possible. A less crowded studio makes it easier to move around and keeps the session calm.

You also don’t need to bring professional props, complicated outfits, or anything you’re uncomfortable using.

The most important thing to bring to your newborn photography session is patience.

Your baby may need extra time to settle. They may cry, eat, need a diaper change, or want to be held. All of that is part of the experience.

You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly sleepy baby or a detailed plan. Your newborn photographer will guide you through the session and adjust as needed.

The goal is to create beautiful photographs while keeping your baby safe, comfortable, and cared for.
